What Causes Runny Nose And Sneezing Along With Cough?

My symptoms began as runny nose (clear to occasional white) & sneezing, 3.5 weeks ago. It worsened after 2 weeks, increased nose blowing ( snot colour ranging from clear, white yellow, also fresh blood though the last few days it has been a combination of yellow, gold & blood mixed) coughing (sometimes producing clear or white fluid, sometimes small chunks in white, pale yellow or taupe) I tried to take guaifenesin a few times but, it didn t seem to thin mucus. Because of high blood pressure (for which I take Toprolxl) I have not taken decongestant. Taking acetaminophen for Headache and face pain. Nose and head congestion. Fever has ranged from 99.6 to 103.8 (seemed to drop below 100 with acetaminophen). Coughing spells sometimes seem to be triggered by any intake of food or even just water. A strange symptom (perhaps related to to the acetaminophen not liking my gallstone?) has been yellowish diarrhea which lessened when I reduced acetaminophen. I always hesitate going to doctor. I am allergic to several antibiotics including sulfa and penicillin. I also am on oral meds for metastatic breast cancer. At what point should I see a doctor. Could this be pneumonia or bronchitis? Should I get sputum and nose mucus cultures done? Chest x-ray?

Hello,
While the cough and fever cough certainly indicate a pneumonia (go get that chest x-ray!), the timing and symptoms are also highly suspicious for a secondary bacterial sinus infection. Looks like antibiotics are in your future either way, but your doctor should certainly be able to treat you without the ones you have a known reaction to. Feel better soon!
