What Causes Running Nose Along With Severe Cough And Wheezing?

My husband has had a runny nose for the past two days and was starting to feel like he was coming down with a cold. Yesterday developed a cough, by evening it developed into a severe cough with a lot of wheezing and phlem. Was not breathing very well when he went to bed and by morning could not hardly catch his breath at all. So off to emergency we went. They gave him two breathing treatments, Lasix, and a chest xray. We were told he has congestive heart failure, but with a runny nose?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Congestive heart failure is not normally associated with a runny nose but it is possible that he has both heart failure and either allergies or a cold , causing the runny nose.

There are certain sounds that would have been heard on examination and signs on the X ray that would have been indicative of heart failure.
In addition , if the use of the lasix helped to improve his shortness of breath then this means that there was excess fluids on the lungs (heart failure).

I hope this helps
