Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
After having a colonoscopy I was told I have a tortuous colon. I m female, age 85 and have had a hysterectomy, appendectomy, cholecystectomy; bladder suspenson w/rectocele repair (that one didn t hold). I take Miralax & a stool softener each day. That helps me to have a bm, but I still have to use an enema to remove the remainder. What is the cause of a tortuous or redundant colon and what portion of the colon is usually affected by it?
Hi Thanks for posting on HCM A person with a redundant colon(also called tortuous colon or elongated colon) has an abnormally long colon, especially in the final section (called descending colon). A redundant colon also has additional loops or twists. Some people may have a redundant colon and never experience symptoms associated with it. Others may have increased bloating, constipation, and fecal impaction. Some people may have a redundant colon with no known cause. However, there is a genetic predisposition for developing this condition.
Many people can live with a redundant colon without requiring any treatments. Some severe cases (with recurring complications) do require surgical correction.I will advise -You continue with miralax and stool softener -Eat fiber rich diet -Take enough fruits always like soft pawpaw and avoid fruits like bananas that may rather constipate. -Remain active Hope this will help Wish you good health
