What Causes Redness, swelling And Burning Sensation In Lips?

This morning I woke up with red, swollen, burning and itchy lips. This has happened two other times since Christmas 2014. The lips end up peeling as if I had gotten sunburn and then eventually go back to normal. This only happens in the wee hours before waking because I have woken during the night and noticed nothing wrong with my mouth.

Hi Dear,
Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . the symptoms you mention in query are clearly pointing towards allergic reaction . The allergic reaction occur due to various reason like insect bite , certain food , sun exposure and some medicines . First of all avoid food like sea food like fish prawns and nuts .

In your case symptoms occur due to photoallergic reaction due to excessive sun exposure .

I would suggest you to :-
- Give cold compresses to tour lips .

- Apply lip balm containing broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 to prevent lips form further damage due to sun exposure .

- Take anti allergic drugs bendryl or zyrtec .

- Drink at least 8 glasses of water in a day .

- Keep your self in humid environment .

If condition doesn't get normal in 2-3 days then consult dermatologist for proper examination and to rule out condition like lip infection.

Doctor may prescribe corticosteroid drugs like thalidomide , beta carotene or vitamin B complex supplement.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
