What Causes Redness On The Foot?

I am out of the country and was wearing a brace because I fell and broke my knee cap. I noticed redness on my foot and returned to the orthopedic doctor and was told it is a hematoma. They removed the brace and told me to wear compression stockings which seem to have increased the discomfort. They have me on blood thinners. So 2 questions. Do I need to wear the stockings and are the blood thinners helping or hurting?
