What Causes Red Streak Along Vein While Having Varicose Vein?

Hello. five days ago I went to the ER had a buldging vein on the inside of my right leg straight across from my knee cap almost behind my knee it was hard and hurting a little and skin was red all around the area . They did a ultra sound and found that all my veins were wide open but right were that vein was popped out they said it was a varicose vein there . Now five days later I have a little red streak right along my vein and it has move half way up my thigh . Is this normal with a varicose vein . I went back and they put me on antibiotic s and said that should take care of it in two weeks time . Just kinda worried about it because I had a dvt in this same leg 15 years ago ???????

Hi,Dear,Thanks for your query to HCM.
Dear I read facts of your query and reviewed it in context to your health issues submitted.
I understood your health concerns and feel Concerned about them.
You seem to be suffering from following possibilities-
Mostly this is due to the Acute Deep Vein Thrombosis with Varicose Short Saphenous Vein with old DVT.
With the past history of DVT 15 years agon in the same leg.
A red streak along your prominent varicose vein, indicates acute deep thrombophlebitis which is actively spreading higher up in your thigh.
This the thing to be worried in this background.
Only antibiotics are not going to help you.
You need to Consult Vascular surgeon to fix causes of the red streak with thrombophlebitis in your right leg behind the right knee.

Alerts-for you-
I would suggest you to get stool USG with Dopler Study of the right leg with speciality- Varicose Vein Center again.
Other Causes leading to red streak-while having Varicose Veins-which could be -spreading active thrombus in the deep Veins spreading up from the right lower leg.
The cause of the worsening needs to be investigated by INR studies and by reviewing blood thinner dosages if you are on , or restarting the Blood thiners-like Warfarin to tide over this emergency.

Do's suggested-
Rest with Avoiding long standing jobwork.
Elevation
Anti-inflammatory -like Combiflam Tab
with Warfarrin Tab
with Antibiotics to control acute vein thrombosis - to control the spreading vein thrombus in right leg
Venostocking Support in right leg.
Planning EVLT after the thrombophlebitis and sperading thrombus issue is dealt by - Percutaneous Direct thrombolysis-to prevent complications from-spreading acute deep Vein thrombosis in right leg.

Discus with expert Vein doctors in your locality on urgent basis on the above lines and take care as soon as possible.

For this to verify Second opinion from another Vascular Surgeon and interventional Radiologist as soon as possible.
Just don't worry and be patient and co-operate with your doctors, till you verify with your attending doctors.

Hope this would help you to treat your health issues in the best way possible.

General Surgeon Dr. Pawan Kumar Goyal 's  Response
Yes, you have varicose veins.Popping out of vein ii due to incompetent perforator which connects superficial to deep vein. This red streak is due to inflammation of the vein (Infection). It will subside with antibiotics.
