What Causes Red Rash On The Upper Back On Application Of Sunscreen?

Hello! My daughter, husband and I were on vacation in Florida back in April. We spent a few hours on the beach. I had applied lots of sunscreen to all of us. The sunscreen I put on my daughter was a 70 spf (bought down there, something generic i think). Later that day, a red area showed up on the back of her neck/upper back. It wasn t a exact shape. Almost looked like there were finger marks too. Was it a reaction to the sunscreen? Sun? it is slightly still there but not as red. Thanks! Christina

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Christina

It could be a reaction to the sun and also some amount of scratching from your daughters end. I do not think there is any cause for concern and you need not really worry about it. Avoid further exposure to the sun for at least 7-10 days and apply a cold cream on the region

Best wishes
