What Causes Red Rash On Face Post Cortisone Shot In Knee?

I had a cortisone injection in my knee for a torn maniscus yesterday. My face has got a red rash on it. Is that possibly from the shot and is it something to be concerned about. I feel fine otherwise. How long will it last and how long will the shot be in my body?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

Any kind of medication can cause a rash or an allergic reaction to the cortisone injection.

Any kind of rash or allergy is very dangerous and may cause other symptoms like breathing difficulty. The breathing difficulty occurs because the body produces immunoglobulin to any foreign particles. This can cause the windpipe to narrow and to secrete a lot of mucus.

This mucus would make it difficult for one to breath. Along with this, one may also notice other symptoms like chest pain, panic, and anxiety.

Any kind of allergic reaction is dangerous and it would be best to see your doctor right away. Taking an antiallergen for this would be needed to prevent the rash from increasing or spreading.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
