What Causes Red Discharge From The Ear After A Tympanoplasty?

I am now six days post OP for my tympanoplasty and now seeing a little red clump coming from the ear like I did with day 2 when taking off the pressure cup. I do admit I m a wild sleeper and awaken after feeling like I had been scratching my ear. The Cotten ball was on my pillow (it had fallen out) and that s when I notice the clumps. On day five I experience a ton of middle ear itching in my ear and discomfort when laying down because my ear felt tight. I also had 0% hearing in the operated ear but now I can hear myself breathe. I went back to college on day five which was somewhat hard due to the fact that I could only hear from one ear and I was carrying my backpack which wasn t that heavy (less than 8lbs) but right after school is when All of this started to happen. Is this normal or should I schedule an earlier appointment with my ENT specialist?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern. Red discharge from the ear after a tympanoplasty could be probably ear blisters which can occur after allergic reaction to any chemical agent , it could be because of infection that occur after tympanoplasty due to incomplete antibiotics course or low immunity. Well need not to worry about it , you should apply dry warm compresses on external ear and cover your ear while bathing. Use antiinflamatory or antianalgesic ointment to prevent further spread of infection or if pain is there. Tea tree oil products are very useful to counteract this infection. You should consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and an Otoscopic examination followed by antibiotics and painkillers and antibiotic ear drops. The Infectious fluid can also be drained off manually by the Physician for faster relief.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get well soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwa
