What Causes Red Color Urine While On Amoxicillin After Dental Surgery?

Hi Dr. Grief, I had dental surgery on Thursday and was prescribed amoxicillin 500mg 3 times daily for 7 days and have noticed my urine has turned red. Should I be worried? Generally it is clear and I looked up the side effects for amoxicillin and it said blood in urine is not good. Regards, Trisha

Hello Trisha,

I can understand your concern. Amoxicillin causes your urine to turn dark as it is excreted in urine. Due to this darker color, you may feel like passing blood in urine. If you are not having any other discomfort like burning or pain while urinating, you can ignore it. Keep drinking lots of water so that urine output is diluted.

However, if you are sure that the color is not dark and it is surely blood or if you start developing other symptoms, then you should visit the doctor again.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
