What Causes Recurring Swelling, Sensitivity And Clicking Sound In The Calf Muscle?

I sustained a blow to my right calf muscle a week ago while on vacation in Italy. I had some initial swelling & pain but no discoloration or noticeable bruising. It felt better for a few days afterwards even after doing quite a bit of walking while on tour. On my flights home I experienced swelling in the calf w/some pain but it subsided once I started walking around. I still have some discomfort when I walk & the calf area is sensitive to touch. I have also noticed a slight clicking within the calf muscle when I walk. I have been applying ice to the calf which has provided some relief. What else can I do to expedite the healing process?

Oncologist 's  Response
Hello,

Long-standing (chronic) compartment syndrome below the knee usually affects the anterior fascial compartment (see above). It is caused by a swelling of one of the muscles of the lower leg, called the tibialis anterior muscle. The muscle can swell during exercise.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Esmeralda Sera, Oncologist
