What Causes Recurring Pulsating Pain Along The Spine Post Bone Marrow Stem Cell Implant?

I have pulsating pain along my spine from back of my head to base of spine. It is intermittent and just started yesterday evening while laying on the couch and in bed. It seems to pulsate ib coordination with my heartbeat. It begins with laying down and gradually deminishes. Then if I turn to my side or stomach it occurs again. It is painfull and also feels like little electric shocks causing jerking along the spine. Today it also occurred during a mild straining during bowell movement. The pain was much greater especially in my neck and I could not bend my neck in any direction. I will add that I am post bone marrow stem cell transplant a year and half ago for lymphoma which was successful. Now I have developed GVHD and receiving extracorporal photopharesis treatments for that through a hickman catheter in my chest. Do you think this new issue is related or something unrelated and what may be causing this? This has never occurred prior to last night.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, your pain may be related to the disease you are already suffering.

You need to get X-ray of the spine done and then may also need to consult neurosurgeon to look for any nerve compression or any vertebrae collapse that may cause such pain.

However, you may also need to rule out the relapse of your malignancy in the spine as well. So consult your oncologist as soon as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
