What Causes Recurring Dry Cough And Irritation In Throat?

I ve had a dry, non-productive cough for about 6 weeks or so. It feels like a tickle at the back of my throat. It s sometimes worse at night. My doctor placed me on antibiotics for 10 days, and it got a little better, but I still have a cough that interrupts my work (conversations, meetings) and my sleep. My doctor said he may need to do a check xray even though my lungs were clear. I ve never smoked and have no smokers in my family or at the workplace. I do have GERD, but otherwise am healthy. I m a 63-yr-old woman. Any advice?

Hello,

I think your cough may come from GERD that you are suffering from. I don't think you are having bronchitis or pneumonia so the x-ray most probably will be clear. You should treat your GERD by medications taking omeprazole and lifestyle changes such as not eating acidic and spicy foods, avoiding eating late at night etc. You may need a fybroscopy to evaluate the faryngeal mucosa which may be causing it and also to evaluate oesophagus and stomach.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
