What Causes Recurring Blackouts?

My son has been having blackouts. He has seen a neurologist, and a heart specialist and has been on a 8 hour brain scan. All test show that there is nothing wrong with him. He had another blackout and I took him to an Urgent care and the doctor there said that he had epilepsy, and wanted to put him on Keppra. He said no because of the side affects. I put him on Magnesium, Calcium, and Zinc. It seemed to help for the last 5 weeks until now. Today hes had 2 blackouts. When he was younger he had tubes put into both ear drums. His right ear at the age of 5 he had to have surgery to mend the ear drum. Right after surgery he had a staff infection. They said that it was a fungus. They gave him a tropical cream which I applied as needed. My son lost some hair on the left side of his head..

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. Since opinion of Neurologist/Cardiologist shows there no organic disease in the child, [no structural abnormality in brain scan/cardiac arrhtyhmias] but since he is getting recurrent blackouts [diagnosed as epilepsy] thus ask for EEG [electroencephalograph] which might show unequivocal epileptic activity.

2. make sure to exclude provoking factors like: fever, electrolyte imbalance, brain infection, specific stimuli like: lights, stress, sleep deprivation.

3. If everything is normal one can diagnose the case as " Psychogenic non epileptic seizure" and should be evaluated by Neuropsychological Physician and Anticonvulsant Therapy [AED] should be started only after diagnosis of epilepsy is confirmed.
