What Causes Recurrent Sores On The Fingers?

I have seen a skin doctor for sores on my fingers that come and go for about 1.5 years. He took a biopsy and said it was from dead skin cells in the second layer of skin. It is not infectious but he didn t know a cause. It started with about 14-15 on the fingers of my left hand. They eventually went away then showed up on the fingers of my right hand. They are annoying but not too noticeable to anyone else. Any ideas for a cause? I play stringed instruments but not much any more because of ostioarthritis in my right hand.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Perhaps you have pompholyx which is a form of hand eczema presenting as fluid filled vesicles/ sores on the sides of fingers. Other sites like toes, ear lobe etc may also be similarly involved. The condition is usually itchy and is supposed to be secondary to an allergen like nickel or some food allergen. I suggest you to apply a topicsl steroid cream e.g either clobetasol propionate 0.05% or mometasone furoate 0.1% cream, twice daily for a few days. In addition i suggest yoj to take an oral antihistamine e.g Tab Cetrizine once a day for symptomatic relief from itching.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
