What Causes Recurrent Shingles Break Out?

I got shingles when I was 14, I hoped I would never get it again, I am now 47 and I m experiencing my fourth breakout in the last eight months, it occurs mainly on the mid to upper buttocks area, the last three were tolerable but this time is very painful and larger than the last ones. Why is this reaccurring so much? Does CFIDS/ME have anything to do with it? I was diagnosed with that 20 years ago

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Shingles is caused by Varicella Zoster virus that also causes chicken pox. This virus remains inactive but alive inside the nerves, it can get re-active when a person has compromised immune system or is taking chemotherapy or medicines like Prednisone in high doses or may have HIV/AIDS. Yes, you are right Chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome can be a cause. Opioid painkillers can relieve you from pain. You can apply cold compresses to the affected areas. Eat healthy, stay out of stress. Avoid addictions.
