What Causes Rectal Prolapse Post A Colectomy?

My brother had his entire colon removed and they also removed his large intestine. He now has an iliostomy. He had to be rushed back into surgery in July due to a prolapse from the rectal area. It has held up until a couple of days ago and now a portion is protruding out again. The emergency told us that until it heals completely it will keep going in and out. I am finding that difficult to believe. It is also very sore as when it is out and he is sitting it hurts. What are your thoughts

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

During surgical removal of colon, there might be some weakness of attachments of rectum and lead to rectal prolapse. We can try manual reduction with fingers first, if recurrence develops surgical correction may be needed and the procedure is known as rectopexy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
