Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 56 year old female with no current health issues. Today I have had rectal bleeding this morning and now again this aft. Were recently in the Dominican Republic on vacation and just got back two weeks ago. My husband has Crohn s and had an attack while down there but I didn t really have any issues with the food. Could be totally unrelated or do you think I picked something up while down there?
In most cases, causes of abdominal pain and bleeding through rectum are benign and include haemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and Sitz baths.
It is very important to take lot of fluids, probiotics, high fibre food and stool softeners to avoid hard stool and straining.
If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered.
Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss.
Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help and consult proctologist if necessary.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
