Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am on blood thinner (Coumadin) and I am passing blood through my rectum. The last two times I had my pro time checked, it was too high. Now, we have the machine at home so that we check our blood once a week. My husband has been on coumadin for 20+ years. But, the only disadvantage to that is that we call our numbers in and it may be a week before we hear from our doctor. If I scrape my arm. It will bleed a lot. This week my I really was 4.7. Is this unusual?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Well, it is good that you know Coumadin causes bleeding is INR on Prothrombine time is more than the suggested normal range with Coumadin. You have to consult your Doctor for getting urgent, coagulation profile and adjust the dosages of Coumadine so that it does not cause rectal bleeding. If the rectal bleeding persists even after adjustment of the dosages then you must consult a Gastroenterologist for colonoscopy after taking care of prothrombine time. This is to rule out other causes of bleeding like ulcer, polyp or cancer in the terminal intestinal tract. Per-rectal examination of ano-proctoscopy will help to know whether there are other causes like piles that is hemorrhoids or so.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
