What Causes Rashes On The Skin And Swelling On The Lips?

I broke out with 'welts"/hives on my skin the other and saw an emergency room doctor because my lips swelled up as well. I was treated with an IV solution and the swelling of my lips deminished. I was prescribed Prednisone and Famotidine with a 4 day suppply. I am scheduled to begin taking the prescribed medication this morning. I have also been taking diphenhydramine tablets (25mg) every 4 to 6 hours. The diphenhydramine helped with the welts/hives, however when I woke up this morning, the wlets and hives are back again, however no swelliing of the lips as of this point of time. Should I go to family doctor or see my dermatologist for diagnosis? Thank you for your assistance.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Your symptoms are apparently pointing towards allergic reaction and it can be caused by a number of allergens like certain foods or medicines, bug bites, surface allergen like pollen, certain chemicals, soaps, detergent, poison ivy etc..

The medication advised to you is appropriate to resolve the symptoms but it can provide only symptomatic relief..

So if the symptoms are recurring then you need to consult an Allergist and get evaluated.

An allergy test should be done to rule out the allergen..
Avoid exposure to the allergen once it is ruled out to avoid symptoms..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
