Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Rashes On The Inner Arms And Scratchy Throat After Shoulder Surgery?
My husband had shoulder surgery 2 weeks ago. On the day of surgery came home with redness under same surgery arm. He took oxycodone for two days and we saw that the rash moved down his inner arm on both arms and down to his belly. Also came home with a head cold, scratchy throat and a lot of phlem. Saw doctor today and was told to treat the rash with anti-itching cream. Could this rash be contageous? We have grandchildren coming this weekend?
The rash can be a mild allergic reaction to oxycodone (though it is rare). You can apply anti-itching cream or cream containing antihistamines for a better response.
If your husband didn't have a history of any skin infection before surgery, the rash shouldn't be contagious.
Sometimes, patients do get infected with hospital-acquired infections (nosocomial infections), no worries; just be a little careful with the kids, take precautions.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
