What Causes Rashes Around My Lower Rib Cage?

I have a rash around my lower rib cage and sometimes it shows on one side of my neck as well. It does not itch, I don t have any pain, nor do I have any other symptoms. I am not aware of the rash until I see it in the mirror. Usually it lasts for one day, or for few hours. It started two years ago and it shows two to three times a year. I have been using always the same hygienic items, I am washing the clothes with the same detergent, and my diet did not change. The rash on my ribcage is flat, reddish, and is like a belt around my rib cage (I have it on the back and front of my body). Sometimes it covers more than a lower rib cage - it starts from the lower rib cage to belly button. I don t know what is causing it and I would like to learn more about this symptom, before I go and see a doctorc. Thank you in advance for your answer.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your case history, you are having fungal infection called as tinea corporis.

My treatment advice is:

1. Maintain good hygiene and bath twice daily.
2. Apply an antifungal cream like clotrimazole cream twice daily on affected skin.
3. Take an antihistamine medicine like levocetrizine twice daily for 7 to 10 days.
4. Other treatment options are oral fluconazole, itraconazole and terbinafine to be taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harshit Bhachech
