Greetings. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

With highest probability, you are experiencing a "skipped heart beat" (extrasystole or premature ventricular or atrial heart beat). This phenomenon arises by an ectopic heart beat, an electrical stimulus generated elsewhere in the heart muscle, not the original pacemaker of it. This premature beat then is succeeded by a stimulus from the sinus node, and this second beat is more forceful and hard, which is accompanied by symptoms like shortness of breath and the feeling that the heart is jumping out of the throat. Normally, these "extra" heart beats may be found in every healthy human being, knowing that they could happen to everyone after physical exercise, stress, anxiety and other changes that physiologically are found in the human organism during a day. In this regard, there is nothing to worry about.

However, if this is a very worrisome phenomenon for you, I would recommend you to get an EKG done, and the electrical and conduction systems of the heart will be assessed and decided if further testing is necessary, or that there is nothing worrisome.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
Dr. Meriton
