What Causes Purple Discoloration On Face?

My cheeks have a discoloration -- it is purplish in color; lighter than a pansy purple/pansy pink; it covers a little more than a 2 inch disk on both checks, but is not a circle; top of both checks is a little red; no pain or anything.... It reminds me of what cheeks look like when you go running for 5 km s in cooler/colder temperature; but I have not been doing any running. I notice it the most at night.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from purple discoloration of the face. It may be indicative of purpura. Purpura occurs when small blood vessels burst, causing blood to pool under the skin causing purple spots on the skin that range in size from small dots to large patches. Sometimes, low platelet counts can also cause excessive bruising and bleeding under the skin that appears like purple discoloration. Purpura is a benign condition but may indicative of blood clotting disorder. It may also be due to side effects of estrogen therapy, hormone replacement, weak blood vessels, inflammation in the blood vessels, etc.

People suffering from mild thrombocytopenic purpura may recover without any intervention. But if the purpura does not go away on its own you will have to consult a dermatologist as you need to take medicines. Depending on the response to treatment your dermatologist may suggest surgery. Stay away from addictions if any. Take care of your hygiene, wear soft cotton clothes.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
