What Causes Protein In Urine While Having Diabetes?

I AM A 78 YEAR OLD MAN, FAIRLY HEALTHY, ORTHOPEDIC CONCERNS IN MY LOWER BACK AND KNEES AND HIPS HAVE JOINT REPLACEMENTS. MY NUMBERS ARE GOOD BUT I DO HAVE A MILD CASE OF DIABETES. I GET A CHECK UP EVERY 6 MONTHS. THIS LAST BLOOD WORK REVEALED LITTLE PROTEIN IN MY URINE. MY PCP SAID DONT WORRY ABOUT IT, I THINK YOU NEED TO DRINK MORE WATER. WE WILL CHECK IT AGAIN IN 6 MONTHS. OH! THIS IS THE FIRST TIME EVER FOR PROTEIN IN MY URINE. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Protein in the urine in the case of diabetes is a possible finding due to the effects of diabetes in the kidneys. The next step would depend on the amount of protein found in the urine, if it is trace generally there is nothing to worry.
If it is +1 and above it might need to be followed up with repeat urinalysis or sometimes 24 hour urine test for 24 hour proteinuria. Your doctor will have to decide the needed follow up depending on the level of protein in urine.
Meanwhile you should make sure you take your medications regularly, watch the diet and have good control of sugar levels.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
