What Causes Pressure In The Sternum While On Simvastatin?

Yes, thank you. I am in good health & stay active. On a low dose of Simvastatin for elevated cholesterol yet have a high HDL, above 100, so its not been a concern. In the past year, I ve had a couple episodes of feeling pressure build in sternum area (esophagus) with rice sticking & not going down. Had a barium swallow - was normal (back in Jan) & no symptoms since. I know to avoid or have rice with sauce. But last night, for unknown reasons, not seeming related to eating, felt pressure in the sternum (between both breasts) that feels like I swallowed a golf ball. I have had some extra emotional stress the past couple days but have worked through in mostly and am feeling fine with regards to that, so don t know if that s the cause. I found this pressure is still there and it feels sore in that area when I breathe in deep or when laying on the floor this morning trying to do my daily crunches yet I did them anyway. Hoped it would just alleviate without having to get in to the Dr. but didn t know whats going on. Never diagnosedhttp://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/topics/drugs/simvastatin/58660?iL=true with hiatal hernia (occasionally burp or have a little reflux but don t take anything since not usually a problem). Wondered if I should try an antacid to see if it relieves this pressure, which isn t feeling as bad as it did last night. Not feeling any GI distress, though.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It is not related to simvastatin. As a first line management you can take analgesics like Paracetamol or Aceclofenac for pain relief. If symptoms persist, it is better to consult a physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
