What Causes Post Nasal Drainage Along With Difficulty In Swallowing?

I have been dealing with what we think is an allergic reaction to foods but cannot pinpoint exactly what. ei: this always occurs while eating, mucus will start draining down my throat, will progressively get worse like there is something stuck in my esophagus, can not swallow, the flow of fluids is like someone has turned on the faucet in my throat, if it last long enough will feel it coming out the roof of my mouth. get bad hiccups which only makes the issue more difficult. If I can throw it up it will give a little relief but will continue with the drain, hiccups, etc. I can not drink anything during this process with the hope of breaking up this flow. When I through up it if clear, very foamy and sometimes there is a little bit of food in it, never bringing up everything I have eaten. I have never been able to consistently tie it to any certain food that I eat, most of the time I am fine and then there will be a reaction of some sort. These expulsion periods can last from 30 minutes to 8 hours of expelling fluids and is very draining because of dehydration. I have never been tested for food allergies, have environmental allergies that I went thru the shots for 5 years and have taken meds also. Generally it does not happen in the morning but today I did have a spell that lasted 1 hour, I had greek yogurt with granola and fresh strawberries. these thing I eat on a regular basis.

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern.

The symptoms post nasal drainage along with difficulty in swallowing as you mention in your query are pointing towards sinusitis .There could be many causes for sinusitis like cold ,nasal polyp, respiratory track infection ,deviation of nasal septum and weak immune system due various diseases. You should consult ENT specialist so that he can diagnose you properly to find out exact cause , he can review symptoms and take physical examination .Doctor can refer for CT scan and blood test .If the sinusitis is due to bacterial infection then doctor can prescribe antibiotics along with antihistamines and decongestants which relives the symptoms like post nasal drip.Antihistamines are also effective if the causative factor is allergy. If mucus is thick you can also use mucolytic agent like ambroxol to make mucus thin which can be easily removed . Apart from this you should take steam twice a day which will give relief from congestion , also do warm saline gargles .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
