What Causes Poor Memory?

Hi I'm 19 and it's only recently come to my aren't in that for as long as I can remember I've had really bad memory, mind lapses and various mind blanks while reading to the point I'll have to blink my eyes and restart what I'm reading. Also during 2016 I was a drug user and have now been clean for over 7 months but in hindsight amphetamines gave me a a clarity and focus that I didn't have otherwise and I was wondering what professional input or opinions I could get which would help any of these problems etc. Thanks

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello,

I can understand your concern and I'd like to tell you that it’s not common to see memory issues at your age. In most of individuals memory and cognitive impairment start after the age of 50 to 60 years.

The symptoms you have like bad memory, lapses in mind, blank feeling in mind, and the compulsion to blink eyes during reading, etc., could be occurring due to anxiety. Anxiety might lead to poor focus and thus can impair memory. The response to amphetamines also proves this. Amphetamines stimulate brain and thus you become focused.

Please consult a psychiatrist for opinion and evaluation. Drugs like Modafinil can be used to improve the concentration and your memory will improve. Avoid taking Amphetamines because these are drugs of abuse and can lead to problems in future.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Seikhoo Bishnoi
