What Causes Poor Concentration, Memory Loss, Depression And Social Anxiety Disorder?

I m a 36 year old female and have been having problems with memory, concentration, & problem solving for about a year, and it has been getting progressively worse. I m having trouble keeping track of tasks at work. If I don t take a lot of notes, I forget what I was working on. I have difficulty when watching TV or movies in remembering what is going on. I forget conversations I ve had with people and end up telling people the same things multiple times. Additionally, I have depression and social anxiety disorder. I did go through a severe depressive episode around the time that the cognitive issues began. I was on a variety of psychiatric medication for many years. About 5 months ago I went off all meds for personal reasons. I m concerned that if I see a neurologist, I will just be told to go back on psych meds, which I would rather not do. I m aware that depression can cause cognitive issues, but I started experiencing this decline while I was still taking medication, so I question whether going back on them would fix the issue. Thank you for any advice you can give.

Dear
Welcome to HCM
We understand your concerns

I went through your details. At your age, memory problems like amnesia, dementia or Alzheimer's are pretty less common. Many young people do complain having problems with memory. These problems are due to either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task.

When a person is having anxiety disorder or depressive disorders, it is quite common for them to complaint about memory loss. This memory loss may not be due to degeneration of brain cells, as in the case of schizophrenia. this memory loss is due to the anxiety itself.

In any case, I suggest you to consult a neurologist for memory related investigation and further advise. Early diagnosis can help you in early recovery.
