What Causes Pink Stool In A Child After Drinking Soy Milk?
Hi, A month ago my baby girl had a bout of gastro. She would vomit up any formula given to her during the night. There was only slight diarrhea, maybe one or 2 nappies of very pale and soft po. This settled quickly. I changed her on to soy milk and stopped formula. (she eats solids) When I give her dairy now I notice pinkish colouring in her stools. Q. Is this part of the milk reaction? Q. Will she be able to go back to dairy? Q. Is there an alternative to dairy formula Thanks in advance Paul Hocking
This may indicate lactose intolerance which is a condition which quite commonly happens in infants. The intestine which got some special enzymes, which break down milk sugar lactose to glucose. Infection may damage that enzymic flora as a result. The milk sugar cannot convert into glucose so diarrhea persists. I think you put the baby on lactose-free milk, take the baby to your doctor who may send the stool for culture and sensitivity and give adequate treatment if the infection is found.
