What Causes Pimples Around The Mouth Of A Kid?

I have a 7 year old boy with about 20 pimples around his mouth, under his nose and on his chin. He is otherwise in great health. He had a very sore throat about two weeks ago but he was better after a few days. I came down with a very sore throat two days ago. I also had a fever of 101. I am feeling better now but still have a mild sore throat. Wondering if this could be causing the breakout on my son's face?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for query . The symptoms you mention in query are clearly indication a condition known as 'PERIORAL DERMATITIS'

There can be many reason for the occurrence of this condition like iiritation of skin due to heavy ointments , cortisone cream or fluoridated toothpaste and exposure to sun makes it further complicated .

The sore throat probably not the reasons for pimples .

The condition will start subsiding as to stop using any ointment you are using

-start using non fluoride toothpaste .

- Give cold compresses to affected area .

- Use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 to prevent skin from further damage .

If condition doesn't start improving in a week then consult dermatologist . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (erythromycin or metronidazole)or anti viral drugs depending upon the diagnosis . He/she may also prescribe oral isoteritenoin.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
