What Causes Persistently Swollen Tonsils?

What could be causing inflamed tonsils and what seems to be inflamed taste buds? A white coating occasionally covers my tongue but can be easily cleaned off. I have not noticed or been told that my breath is any worse and my girlfriend would surely tell me. It is not painful except for my tongue but it isn t that bad. The swollen tonsils were originally believed to be strep or mono but both were ruled out.
