What Causes Persistent Vaginal Bleeding After Intercourse?

im age 37 and recently after intercourse with my fiancé I have been bleeding. There is no pain at all during sex and after. I start off red blood like if its my period spotting as the day goes on it turns brown and after a day or so it goes away. What might this be, im very concern. We stopped having sex for few days and one night we had sex and there was no blood. After a day we had sex again and I started to bleed during sex again. This has just started within the last 2 months. thank you

Hi there,

This is called post-coital bleeding, and unfortunately I would have to suggest that you visit a gynaecologist. It is caused by areas within your cervix or vagina being more sensitive to friction, which causes the bleed. It can simply be inflammation from an infection like chlamydia, or something benign like a cervical polyp, but it can also be due to more serious things like cervical cancer.

The gynaecologist will have to do a vaginal examination to look for any abnormalities in the cervix or vaginal wall, and usually proceed with a pap smear to look for cancer cells. They will also probably do a swab while they're there to look for any infections. There is no need to wait for a time when you are bleeding, because sometimes the bleeding will make it hard to look at the surface of the cervix, and also make the pap smear a little less accurate.

Hope this helps, and all the best to you.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
