What Causes Persistent Swelling And Pain In Foot?

I have a pain in mid rt metarsal area which arose after striking foot on pool deck while swimming. The day after the blow to the foot, I had an annoying pain, but functioned normally. After a few days my foot swelled out of control. I could not walk or sleep. 2 days ago, I went to an urgent care facility. X-rays were negative for a fracture. The m.d. prescribed 500 mg cephalexin 4 x per day for 14 days. After 2 days, I have had no improvement in swelling. The entire time I have averaged 1500 mg ibuprofen per day. I am wearing a soft shoe ans icing 4-5 times per day. I stopped all exercise 2 days ago. After 2 days, I have had no improvement in swelling, and the pain continues.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If the x ray did not show a fracture then the pain would be due to injury to the muscles and adjacent soft tissues.

This can sometimes take weeks for resolution depending on the extent of the injury.

You would need to: (a) continue to rest the foot whenever possible,
(b)continue the use of the anti inflammatory pain medication - ibuprofen, but if this is not working for you then you can use an alternative from this class of medication eg cataflam, naproxen
(c)also consider application of topical analagesics such as voltaren gel
(d)elevate the foot whenever possible
(e)may need to apply a bandage

I hope this helps
