What Causes Persistent Productive Cough In An Elderly Person?
I have an 89 year old friend..female. She has an on again, off again cough where she coughs up mucous. Some days it s constant, other days it may only be once or twice. I have taken her to ENTs..they have tried nasal sprays and cough meds. She has had a barium swallow...negative. We have been to an allergist and had the allergy tests done...no allergies. Very frustrating. Some days all the coughing leaves her weak and she just sleeps for hours. I m thinking of a pulmonologist (sp?) next. Suggestions? Thank you

If these are ruled out then chronic bronchitis or emphyseaa may be considered. He should do lung ventilation tests to verify his lung capacity and then therapy can include inhalatory steroids or aminofilin. Of course, xrays should rule out pneumonia first which may necessiate antibiotics.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time. Kindly regards. Wish you a good health. DR. Ivan Rommstein
