What Causes Persistent Pain In The Tooth Post Partial Root Canal Treatment?

I was in extreme pain and given a partial root canal, sent home without any antibiotics and givenwith an appt to come back in 2 weeks to complete the procedure. After five days I still had pain. When I went back to the dentist, he wrote me a prescription for amoxcillin. I am on the third day of this meds. Might I have been exposed to infection in my bloodstream because of the partial root canal?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your health query and can very well understand your health concerns..

As per your complain in case after partial root canal is done there are chances that the infection is still present as well as the infected nerve tissue is not completely extirpated from the root canals and due to this there is pain.
You were not given any painkillers to control pain and antibiotics to reduce infection and all this is leading to the discomfort, along with this a time duration of 2 weeks is not correct as root canal should not be left partially done for such a long time and each appointment is done in a gap of 2 to 3 days and the complete procedure should be finished in a span of almost 10 to 12 days..

You should take amoxicillin for infection but you also need painkillers like Ibugesic Plus or Ketorol DT or Tramadol whichever is available at the medicine shop near you to relieve pain..

You should also avoid extremely hot or cold foods as they can cause discomfort and pain..
Avoid chewing from the side where root canal is being done.
As your pain subsides ask the dentist to complete the treatment as delay can cause re-infection..

Hope this information helps and thanks for writing to Healthcare magic..

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

The main reason for pain after opening root canal is due to infection or trauma caused by procedure . Sometimes infection left even after treatment which increase underneath tooth and cause pain .

Your dentist has given you right treatment . So no need to panic it will go away as you proceed with your antibiotic course .

Do warm saline rinses several times a day .

Take ibuprofen ( if not allergic ) or acetaminophen for pain .

Sometimes infection can also spread in blood stream but it rarely happens .

As you already start taking antibiotics , so no need to panic .

If pain persist even after completing antibiotics course then again visit your dentist .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
