What Causes Persistent Pain In Patella Post An Injury?

Dropped 100 pound weight on knee above patella. After 2 weeks, swelling and bruising are almost gone, but now I have pain in my patella while walking (when my knee has to bend). Can I continue home treatment or does it sound like I may have fractured my patella?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since swelling is gone, it should not be a fracture but since you are having persistent pain after injury you are suggested to visit ER, get an X-ray done to rule out any fracture.

Get physically examined by an orthopedic to rule out Chondromalacia, any damage to the cartilage below the knee cap.

Do not strain unnecessarily, stay at rest. Take pain relieving medications, NSAIDS, Iburpofen, etc,(Combiflam, Advil, Motrin) one sos when required.

Your treating doctor can suggest you bracing or stretching. May treat you by injections.

If you do not respond & your discomfort does not subside, he may suggest you Chondmalacia surgery to fix any unstable cartilage flaps on the patella. For physical therapy, take the help of a Physiotherapist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
