What Causes Persistent Nose Bleeds?

I have been experiencing severe nose bleeds for the past few weeks. Previously it was once per week, today I had two. They are increasing in severity. The last one lasted 30 minutes of heavy bleeding with large clots of blood. It seems to be related to a sore in the nose. Do I need to go to the ER?

Hi,

If you have heavy bleeding that lasts you will need to see a doctor and sometimes even go to ER. The reason is to make sure the bleeding is stopped on time and also to do checks to make sure you are not developing anemia.
The doctor will also need to do an examination of your nostril to see for the cause of the bleeding. If no visible lesions that justify the bleeding are identified in the nose then the doctor will need to do some blood tests to see how is you coagulation function and platelets in blood.

Meanwhile if you get a bleeding you will need to keep your head in a neutral position (not banded forward or backward), you can put an ice pack at the back of the neck and also keep your nostrils tight between your big and index finger for at least 15 minutes (do not try to see if the bleeding has stopped before 15 minutes as this can dislodge the clot that is forming in the bleeding area).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
