What Causes Persistent Nasal Congestion?

Hi there. For about three months now, I have been experiencing a blocked nose. It s not just any blocked nose, it s just one side of the nostril, and it keeps producing green mucus and in the mornings I wake up congested and my nostril oozes out mucus over my pillow during the night. It isn t a cold, but sometimes I get rather headachey behind the nostril and one side of the head. Sometimes it clears up. Than the next day it s all congested in that one side of the nostril again. It s really effecting my sleep and I m quick sick of blowing my nose all the time. Especially after three months or so. Thanks for your time. Ben, New Zealand.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Ben,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on your description, you can overcome blocked nostrils by treating conservatively by following means:
1. Steam inhalation thrice daily to liquefy mucous for easy drainage.
2. Use of decongestant medications containing Chlorpheniramine maleate when necessary.
3. Apply Oxymetazoline or Xylometazoline nasal drops twice a day.
In case you do not find relief with conservative management by about 2 weeks, you need to get your nose examined clinically by consulting ENT Surgeon as the cause could be nasal septal deviation or chronic sinusitis, which needs to be confirmed and treated accordingly.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
