What Causes Persistent Menstrual Pain With Episodes Of Depression?

Good morning, It has now been a few years since I have been suffering menstrual pain for at least three weeks in a row, during one cycle. It is very discomforting, as well as difficult to keep the energy up while working. Additionally, I experience episodes of depression accompanying them. Can you please give me your view in terms of what is happening to me, and what could be the source of this problem? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
Based on your symptoms, I would like to rule out Endometriosis.

Would you please clarify a few things for me?
-do you have children? Any miscarriages?
-any previous surgeries or abdominal procedure?
-how is your flow of blood during menstruation? (heavy or with clots or dark blood)
-Have you had any pelvic infections?
-are your cycles regular?
- any family history of similar symptoms?
-any other medical issues? Medications? Like for thyroid?

I recommend :
-an OBGYN consult
-an ultrasound abdomen
-an explorative laparoscopy to check for Endometriosis if clinically indicated.
-blood tests (complete blood count, TSH, free T3, free T4, Vitamin D levels,),;
-take a calcium (500mg) with vitamin d and vitamin C supplement (500mg) every day.
-exercise for at least a half hour everyday (walking in fresh air will do)

Based on the clinical findings and above test results, a diagnosis cam be made and treatment done.
Endometriosis is when tissue similar to the inner uterine lining grows outside the uterus and can vary in degree & intensity. Treatment depends on severity and whether you plan to have children.
Hormone Tablets can help to suppress this growth but will prevent normal menstruation and ovulation.

Please see your OBGYN for early diagnosis as the sooner treatment is initiated, the better the prognosis.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
