What Causes Persistent Foot Pain While On Aspirin?

Pain in foot when in bed when waking up or when sitting for a while. When moving foot sideways or up and down for about 5 times, it disappears, but it comes back after a minute or so. when I start walking during the day it does not appear, though it is present in the form as tightness while I walk to the bathroom after getting up from the bed. the foot pain is present at the base of my toes and along the inside of the foot. It feels as maybe the foot does not get enough blood due to my PAD and walking helps to push the blood. If this is a circulatory problem should I take more Aspirin or is it a neurological problem? What should I do about it? Last time when they took my blood, I was told that it "flows very slowly" and after it started flowing, it clotted - I was told that the butterfly was too small for taking the blood, and they changed it to the full size needle. I had a pulmonary embolism after a flight in coach from Australia to USA and was put on coumadin for 6 months, but that was about 6 years ago. Ruta.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern and after reviewing your medical history I'm of the following opinion:

1. pain in foot which disappear after walking a while could be 'Intermittent claudication' which can be manifestation of PAD [peripheral arterial disease] for which general instructions advised are:

i. stop smoking and tobacco in any form, completely
ii. walk slowly,at slower pace to avoid claudication
iii. raise the heel of shoes by 1/2"
iv. take maximum care to avoid injury to foot,as it may precipitate a gangrene.
v. Peripheral Vasodilators like:
. Pentoxyphyllin 400 mg thrice daily
. Xanthinol nicotinate 500 mg twice daily [both with meals]
. Cilostazol 100 mg twice daily [half hour before food] is ideal
vi. One may consult a surgeon for lumbar sympathectomy, or vascular surgery or amputation as necessary

2. regarding whether it could be a neurological problem, check with a Neurologist to exclude causes like: cramps or tingling in the limbs\

3. since you had an embolic attack, so check with the INR [international normalized ratio] to check whether there are chance of bleeding [if greater] or chances of clot [if less] are more.

4. since Aspirin [in low dose] is usually advised but one have also to look into other modifiable factors like:
. obesity [reduce weight]
. lack of physical activity [regular exercise]
. unhealthy diet [ take more of fatty food and avoid salt items]
. addiction [stop smoking/alcohol]
. high blood pressure, high blood sugar, abnormal lipid profile and kidney function
