What Causes Persistent Cough ?

I have a persistant cough for the past 3-4 months. I was tested and cleared of having whooping cough. I had other health problems in the past 6 months including a white tail spider bite, and a lump removed from my foot. My doctor said to come back if the cough did not clear but I am sick of taking antibiotics. What can be the cause of my cough. It keeps me awake at night.Regards Marie

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
You are having chronic cough, which is not responding to the antibiotics.
So we need to rule out following possibilities.
1. Chronic infection like tuberculosis
2. Bronchitis.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done
1. Chest x ray
2. PFT (pulmonary function test).
Chest x ray is needed to rule out infections like tuberculosis.
PFT is needed to rule out bronchitis.
So I advice you to first diagnose yourself and then start appropriate treatment.
Haphazard use of antibiotics should be avoided as it can delay the recovery and increases drug resistance.
