What Causes Persistent Cough Post Extraction Of Wisdom Tooth?

2 days after I had my top 2 wisdom teeth pulled, I started an unusual (for me) kind of cough. I cough occasionally when I am quiet with my mouth shut. When I start talking, I find it hard to catch my breath and it ignites the coughing. And I have been very very tired! Needing to nap one or two times a day. I first tried natural supplements like Elderberry and Milk Thistle and Oregano oil. None helped much. Last night I got a liquid cough suppresant/expectorant that contains Dextromephorthan HBr, USP 20 mg, Guaifenesin, USP 400 mg. I took a dose before bed, one in the middle of the night, and one today. It seems to be helping slightly. I don't have any cold symptoms like sneezing or a runny nose.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain coughing along with breathlessness after wisdom tooth extraction can be due to either a side effect of the local anaesthesia that must be given to you before tooth extraction while can also be due to side effects of the medicines like antibiotics and painkillers that must be given to you post extraction..
The symptoms would however resolve once the medicine intake will be stopped..
But in case if you have severe difficulty in breathing, choking etc, you should immediately consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like blood tests can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.
You can be advised to take different medications if it is the cause for the symptoms..
In case if it i due to local anaesthesia then as of now taking anti allergics and cough suppressants will help and gradually the symptoms will resolve once the effect of the anaesthseia will wean off..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
