What Causes Persistent Cough And Nasal Congestion?

My 12 year old daughter developed a sudden persistent cough with nasal congestion. She does not have a fever. Cough medicine and decongestant does not releive the cough at all. She has a history of pneumonia (3x). She did not have a flu shot. I recently had bronchitis. Can this be pneumonia, bronchitis, and/or the flu without a fever?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Bronchitis or pneumonia can be viral or bacterial. Though viral infections can have a fever, the fever is more severe or persistent in bacterial infections. This means that she may have viral bronchitis or pneumonia.

Since, the cough is persistent and not responding to typical medications and she has a previous history of pneumonia- she should be seen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
