Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Persistent Brown Vaginal Discharge Inspite Of Taking Norethindrone?
I was on a combination birth control pill for over three years. About 6 months ago I began to get brown discharge and breakthrough bleeding. I visited my obgyn and she changed me from combination pill to Progestrin only (mini pill). I was having constant brown discharge for 2 months on the mini pill. Eventually I was switched to 5mg Norethidrone and that worked well for 4 months. No periods or bleeding at all. This past 3 days the brown discharge has began again with some slight cramping. Recent pap (8 months ago) was normal. I had ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound and that was normal. Thyroid hormones were checked and were normal. What would be causing this brown discharge?
Your symptoms are mostly suggestive of vaginal fungal infection. For which you can take some antibiotic preferably cefadroxyl or doxycycline after an expert opinion along with cetrizine or avil for itching and burning. You can take fluconazole 150 mg or use clingen-forte vaginal pessary to put into your vagina once daily for at-least 5 days. Maintain the hygiene of private part either by regular washing with soap water or you can use v-wash vaginal gel.
