What Causes Paranoia And Confusion While On Lexapro?

A male teenage friend of our family does not produce serotonin. He was given one 10 mg of Lexapro and had severe side effects. Ranging from paranoia to intense fear and confusion. It has been 3 weeks since the one dose of Lexapro and symptoms have not gone away. Is this possible? What kind of Dr should the family go to try to get him help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your friend should have seen some improvement within 2 weeks of starting Lexapro. Normally when patients start Lexapro they need a follow-up visit within 2 weeks. Sometimes the patient needs a higher dose and the doctor may need to adjust the dose. In some cases, a combination with another drug is needed.

In the case of your friend, a higher dose of Lexapro may be needed or an antipsychotic may need to be added if he has paranoia.

The doctor that started the treatment is the one he should see so the doctor can follow-up and decide on needed adjustments.

I hope this is helpful and answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further assistance is needed.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
