What Causes Palpitations And Shortness Of Breath?

Hello, I am a 19 year old female, since the age of 10 I ve occasionally had palpitations and for the last year, I ve gone through episodes where I feel like I can t take a full breath in, only little ones. It s almost as if something is stopping me, and I have to frequently yawn to get the sensation of a full breath. I m not sure if it s related, but throughout the years I ve been told I have a strange heart rhythm. It s always been rather high when stationary, often in the high 80s. I ve had multiple doctors tell me my heart rate seems to quicken and then slow down and then speed up again. I was sent a few months ago for an ECG, which turned out normal. I was just wondering if I may just have a fast heart rate or should I look into this further with my doctor? Thank you.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking

Since you have palpitations since the age of 10 so any cardiac cause should be ruled out first. Even if ECG is normal even then a cardiologist opinion should be sought. ECHO should be done to rule out any structural lesion of heart. Cardiologist will rule out any arrhythmia. If that comes normal then other possibility of your symptoms is anxiety.

You have shortness of breath and feeling that something is stopping you to breath. These could be due to anxiety and need evaluation. Please consider consulting a psychiatrist for evaluation of your symptoms and treatment.

Thanks and Take care
