What Causes Pains Like Electric Shock?

I am 29, female, 115 lbs., 5'4", not terribly fit. I occasionally get pains that feel like an electric shock. This started when I was a kid in my legs. My mom always said they were growing pains, but I still get them and they have been getting worse over the last few years. Now I get them in my legs, arms, chest, and head and they are quite intense. They are brief, but have gotten so bad that I can no longer play it off when I get one- I yelp and twitch for a few moments until they pass. They seem to happen cyclically- I will get them rather frequently for a few months and then not have them at all for a few months. Today, I got one so bad in my shoulder that I looked around in my car to see if I could have been actually electrocuted by something.
