What Causes Painfully Swollen Thumb And Index Fingers?

Hi, I have a swollen left hand at the base of the thumb down to the wrist, as well as swollen index and middle fingers. This is the second time it has happen within 6 months. I think that area has some arthritis, when not swollen it is thicker than the right. It is quite painful to touch forefinger and thumb together with any pressure. It seems to be more painful in the mornings but the swelling is the same all day, [this is the second day.] I am 62 and on no medication. Cheers Loni
