What Causes Painful Red Spots On The Feet After Hiking?

After walking or hiking, I develop red sore spots on the bottom of my feet, sometimes very quickly. They are often warm to the touch and can sometimes itch. They takes days to go away. I ve heard them called hot spots before as precursors to blisters. However, they occur usually on the outer edge of my heels or balls of my feet where blisters have never formed on me. These usually occur in warmer climates when I am not wearing socks but I ve seen it with running shoes and hiking boots too. Is this due to poor gait or shoes that don t fit properly?
